#. If you are on the Home page, then click on the house icon to switch to the /Layout/ view. \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1b.png?maxwidth=600 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1b.png]] \\ \\
#. Now you may have several panels open in your layout from a previous study. Let's close them. There is an easier method to do this rather than clicking on the *x* in every panel. In the /Command/ bar, type *close all*. Logos will try to anticipate your command and show you what it finds in a drop down menu. In this case since we knew the command we can ignore the drop down menu.
#. Now click on the blue circle with the arrow to have Logos execute our command. Be patient, it may take a few seconds for Logos to complete this.
#. Now your layout window should be empty.

\\ \\
!! Selecting your book to read
We will use the most common method to select our book, use the Library drop down menu. Later for other methods you might want to view this wiki article: [[Opening your resources (books) >> Layouts # Opening your resources (books)]].
 Use Library to open your book e.g. /Defending Your Faith/, or see [[Opening resources >> Layouts # Opening your resources (books)]]. \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1d.png?maxwidth=600 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1d.png]] \\

#. Click on the book icon to have Logos show us the drop down Library tool.
#. You will notice all your books in the tool when the Library tool first displays. To reduce the number of books in our view we can use the /Find/ box to filter our library. If you know one or more words in the title of the book that you want to read, then you can enter them in the /Find/ box and Logos will restrict the book list to those which match your word(s). In this example we will look for the book /Defending Your Faith/. In the /Find/ box type *defend*. Notice that Logos found only 3 bo (…)
#. Now locate the book /Defending Your Faith/ in the list. Then click on its title to have Logos open it for us. \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1d.png?maxwidth=600 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1d.png]] \\ \\
#. Logos opens our book into the layout.

!! Opening the Highlighting tool and Resizing panels
As you are reading in a book you may like to highlight phrases or sentences that you want to remember. Logos provides an extensive set of highlighters. Logos also provides a way to navigate between highlighted text (see wiki page [[Finding Highlighted Text]]). You can also search for text which is highlighted (see wiki article [[Searching for a word with a specific highlighted pen >> Finding Highlighted Text # Searchingforawordwithaspecifichighlightedpen]]).

You can also search for text which is highlighted (see wiki article [[Searching for a word with a specific highlighted pen >> Finding Highlighted Text # FindingyourHighlights]]).
Also in this section we will resize our Highlighting tool panel and the panel for the book.
\\ \\
#. Now you should see the /Table of Contents/. You can click on any of the entries there and Logos will reposition your book to that location. Also you can grab the right edge of the /Table of Contents/ and resize the width of it. If an entry of the /Table of Contents/ is too wide to fit Logos abbreviates it, but if you hold your mouse over that entry Logos will show you a pop-up with the full entry.
#. To hide the /Table of Contents/, click on the chevron icon.

\\ \\
!! Highlighting in your book
While you are reading in your book you may find text that you would like to highlight. This section will show you the basics on how to do this. \\ \\

[[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1p.png?maxwidth=600 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1p.png]] \\ \\
#. Use your mouse and drag over the text that you want to highlight. Notice that Logos selects the text and shows it with temporary blue highlighting.
#. Now in the Highlighting tool, select which highlighting style that you want and click on it. Logos will apply the highlighting style to your text. \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1q.png?maxwidth=600 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1q.png]] \\ \\
#. In your book click somewhere off the selected text to have Logos remove the blue temporary highlighting. Notice that you text now is highlighted. You can apply more than one highlighting style to your text if you desire. Just select the text and use the Highlighting tool again. \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1r.png?maxwidth=600 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1r.png]] \\ \\
#. In the event that you want to remove highlighting from specific text Logos provides a way to erase highlighting. Use your mouse to select the text that you want to erase highlighting from. You can select an area of text larger than just what is highlighted or just a portion of what is highlighted.
#. Then in the Highlighting tool click on *Erase*. Logos removes the highlighting. There also is a keyboard shortcut, on your keyboard press the key combination *Ctrl Shift K* (Mac users: press *Shift-Command-K*) \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1s.png?maxwidth=600 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/ReadingBook1s.png]] \\ \\
#. Logos provides a way to Hide or Show all your highlighting in your book. Click on the /Visual Filter Menu/ icon in the book's toolbar.
#. In the drop down menu locate the highlighting that you want to Hide/Show and click on it. If it is checked then highlighting is shown. If unchecked then it is hidden. Notice that if you have used different styles of highlighting that you can independently Hide/Show them as there will be multiple highlighting entries in this menu. See the wiki page [[Visual Filter Menu]] to learn more about the /Visual Filter Menu/.
