!! Introduction

  Logos4 provides the ability to create a /Note/ file where you can add individual notes. You can create as many of these /Note/ files as you wish. In a /Note/ file you have 3 methods in which you can add individual notes as stated below. You will not be limited to one method, but are free to use all of the methods for your individual notes in your /Note/ file.

#. _You can add unattached notes within a Note file._ \\ This is done by clicking on *Add note* button found in the toolbar of your /Note/ file's panel. \\ \\

#. _You can add a note which is tied to a Bible reference (specific Bible verse) in all Bible referenced resources._ \\ See the article [[Adding a note to a Bible reference in all Bibles >> # Adding a note to a Bible reference in all Bibles]] below for how to do this. \\ \\

!!!!! Basics

  Below are some of the /basics/ in a /Note/ file.

#. When you add an individual note, there are 2 basic fields for your note.

#. The /Title/ field can be edited to help you recognize your note's content. When you create a note using methods 2 & 3 as mentioned above, Logos4 will insert the Bible reference or the resource's name in front of the /Title/. To edit the /Title/ click in the title area and Logos4 will show you a text box. Then just type what you would like for your title.

#. The /Content/ field is located just below the /Title/. When you click on it Logos4 will show you the /Content/ text box. You can enter multiple lines of text here. You can also select your text within the /contents/ box and use controls on the toolbar to change the selected text's format. You can also add [[hyperlinks >> # How do I add a hyperlink to the note file?]] inside of your note to other resources and such.

#. When you have a note selected or you hover your mouse over a note, you will notice the delete icon {{$ media:Notes1b.png }}. If you click on this icon Logos4 will delete that specific note. If you accidentally do this, you can quickly use *Ctrl Z* to restore the note.

#. Logos4 allows you to view your notes within your /Note/ file in 2 modes:

#. /Full/ which shows the /Contents/ of each note under its title.

#. /Compact/ which shows only the /Title/ with a short excerpt from the /contents/ grayed out to the right of the title. The /Contents/ for all the individual notes will be hidden, except for a selected individual note.

 

If your notes markers are not showing up in your resource, you may have them turned Off in the [[Visual Filter Menu]] menu. Please see the wiki page [[Visual Filter Menu]] to learn how to turn them On/Off.

!! Adding a note to a Bible reference in all Bibles

*Note:* These notes will also show up in other resources which are referenced by Bible verses. (e.g. Commentaries)

 

#. Open your note file.

 #. Click on *File* in the top menu.

 #. On the right side of the drop down menu find your note file and click on it. \\ (hint: if you have a lot of files, then on the upper right side of the drop down in the Find box, type /Note/ and it will filter the results on the right side of the drop down)

#. Open a Bible resource and navigate to a verse in which you want to add a note. \\ \\  [[ {{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes2a.png?maxwidth=550 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes2a.png]] \\ \\

#. Right click on a word in the verse that you want to add to your notes.

#. In the pop-up menu on the right click on *Reference*.

#. Now down at the bottom right area of the pop-up find your note file and click on it. \\ \\ {{$ media:Notes2b.png }} \\ \\

#. In your notes Logos4 will add the Bible reference as the title.

#. The focus will be placed on the note contents. Add your notes for this verse here.

#.  You can change the color of the box that appears next to your note. In the note click on the colored box next to your specific note. \\ \\ {{$ media:Notes2c.png }} \\ \\

#. In the pop-up color selector, click on the color that you want.

 #. Make sure that you have it checked in [[Visual Filter Menu]] (3 circle thingy in the toolbar) \\ \\

 #. Hold your mouse over the colored box next to your verse.

!! Adding a note via highlighting text in a Bible resource

*Note:* This method will work in resources other than Bibles as well.

#. Open your note file.

 #. Click on *File* in the top menu.

 #. On the right side of the drop down menu find your note file and click on it. \\ (hint: if you have a lot of files, then on the upper right side of the drop down in the Find box, type /Note/ and it will filter the results on the right side of the drop down)

#. Navigate to the text. Use your mouse to select the text that you want highlighted.

#. In the pop-up menu on the right click on *Selection*.

#. Now down at the bottom right area of the pop-up find your note file and click on it. \\ \\ {{$ media:Notes3b.png }} \\ \\

#. In your notes Logos4 will add the Bible reference as the title and a snippet of the text highlighted.

#. The focus will be placed on the note contents. Add your notes for the highlighted text here.

#.  You can change the color of the box that appears next to your note. This will also change the highlighting color of your text in the note. \\ In the note click on the colored box next to your specific note. \\ \\ {{$ media:Notes2c.png }} \\ \\

#. In the pop-up color selector, click on the color that you want.

#. Selection notes will appear *only in the Bible or resource that you originally added the note*. \\ Notice that in this example we made a highlighted note in the ESV Bible. !! Why is there no *Add new note* when I right click on a word in a Bible?

* If you already have one or more note files, Logos4 will remember the last note file that was opened.

* So you will see the last note file (e.g. in the pop-up menu if your last note file was *Creation*, then you will see *Add a note to "Creation"*.

!! How do I create a new note file to be used when I right click in a Bible?

* Before you create new notes in your Bible or resource, use *File*-> *Notes* to create a new file as shown below. Then you can add new notes to it.

#. Click on *File* in the top menu.

#. Click on *Note* in the drop down menu. \\ \\  {{$ media:Notes1a.jpg }} \\ \\

#. When a new Tab for notes is opened, name the file (e.g. ExampleNote). \\ \\  {{$ media:Notes1b.jpg }} \\ \\

#. Now close the new note Tab.

#. In your Bible or resource, select the text/word that you want to make a note for, then Right Click on the selection. \\ \\    [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes1c.jpg?maxwidth=550 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes1c.jpg]] \\ \\

#. You will see the pop-up menu. On the right side close to the bottom, you will see *Add a note to "ExampleNote"* (your new note name will be here not ExampleNote). Now you can Click on this new *Add note to ....* to add your note in your new note file.

!! How do you switch between note files when adding notes?

* Logos4 will remember your last note file that you had open (if you currently do not have a note file open). And the name of this note file will appear at the bottom right of the pop-up menu when you use the right click for adding notes.

* So if you are not going to keep your note files open, then you will need to open the note file that you want to add notes to, then you can close it again. This lock the name of that note file for use with the pop-up menu.

* The best solution is to keep the note files open that you want to add notes to. Then multiple note filenames will appear at the bottom of the pop-up menu. \\ (please notice the scrollbar when you have several notes) \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes4a.png?maxwidth=550 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes4a.png]] \\ \\

!! How do I add a hyperlink to the note file?

 Logos4 allows you to create hyperlinks to other resources in your notes. You can link to Bibles, commentaries, dictionaries, guides, and many other resources/tools. You can tell if the resource/tool can be linked to by opening the resource's/tool's menu and looking for *Copy locations as: URL*.  You will want to select the link type *URL* next to /Copy locations as:/ when creating links for your notes. Logos4 has a keyboard shortcut for  /Copy locations as:/, *Ctrl Alt C* (Mac users: _Option-Co (…)

 

 Most resource types as books will allow you to link more precisely to a particular sentence or paragraph. You will need to set you resource's location at the top of the panel before getting the copying the URL. For instance if you are in a Bible you will want the scripture that you want to link to showing in the reference box of that Bible. In a commentary or dictionary you will want the location showing at the top of the panel.

 

 When linking to some tools Logos4 may not be as precise. For instance if you link to another note, Logos4 will only link to the note file itself. This is also true for clippings. For /Text Comparison/ you would want the scripture in the reference box set before getting the URL.

 

!!! Creating a Link to your favorite Bible

 Logos4 does this automatically for you when you type a scripture reference in your note. So you do not need to get a URL as you would when creating all other hyperlinks. Logos4 does require that the first letter of the Bible book be capitalized! You can use abbreviations to books, see this [[page>> http://www.logos.com/support/lbs/booknames]] for abbreviations for Bible books that Logos4 will recognize. One other important item is that you *must* have a space after the reference before Logos4  (…)

a) Notice that this is *not* linked. The first letter was not capitalized.

b) Notice that this is *not* linked. A space was not entered after the scripture reference.

c) This was linked by Logos4. When linked the scripture reference will turn blue.

d) When you hover your mouse over a link, Logos4 will show you a pop-up of the scripture verse.

e) Notice it shows you which Bible that the link is pointed to. My preferred Bible is set to NIV.

f) To jump to the hyperlink, hold the *Ctrl* key down and click on the link with your mouse. (Mac users: hold *Cmd* key down)

!!! Creating a Link to a specific Bible

 Many times you may want to have a scripture reference to a Bible other than your preferred Bible (one that you set on the Home page). In these cases you will need to manually create the hyperlink as you would for hyperlinks to other resources. Even though Logos4 automatically creates a link to your preferred Bible you can override this when you manually create the link.

#. Type your scripture reference in your note. \\ \\ \\ {{$ media:NotesLink2d.png }} \\

#. Open the Bible that you want to link to.

#. Make sure that the desired scripture reference is showing in the reference box of your Bible. \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink2e.png?maxheight=350 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink2e.png]] \\ \\

#. In your Bible click on the icon in the upper left corner to open the menu.

#. In the drop down menu click on *URL*. (now Logos4 has copied the URL into your clipboard ready for pasting) \\ [you can skip steps 4 & 5 by clicking in the Bible's panel then on your keyboard press *Ctrl Alt C* (Mac users: press *Option-Command-C*), this copies the URL to the clipboard] \\ \\ {{$ media:NotesLink2f.png }} \\

#. In your note, use your mouse to drag over your scripture (or text you entered) to select it.

#. Right click in the *hyperlink box*. A pop-up menu appears.

#. In the pop-up menu click on *Paste*. \\ \\ {{$ media:NotesLink2g.png }} \\

#. Notice that Logos4 pasted your URL into the hyperlink box.

#. In your note, click somewhere off of the selected text to deselect the text.

#. Hover your mouse over the new hyperlink. Logos4 will show you a pop-up box with the verse inside it.

#. Notice that your Bible version is showing at the bottom. This is a good way to verify that your hyperlink is to the correct Bible (not your preferred Bible).

#. To jump to the hyperlink, on your keyboard hold down the *Ctrl* key and click on the link with your mouse. (Mac users: use *Cmd* key)

!!! Creating hyperlinks to other resources

 Logos4 allows you to create hyperlinks to other resources within your notes. You will need to open the resource that you want to link to and position where you want to link to it at the top of the panel. This method also works for anything which has the  /Copy locations as:/ in its menu (see item #5 below). You will be using the *URL* method for /Copy locations/ in your notes.

#. Type the text for link in your note.

#. Open the resource that you want to link to.

#. In your resource click on the icon in the upper left corner to open the menu.

!!! Creating hyperlinks to documents in your computer

 You can also create hyperlinks to other documents such as PDF files or Word documents. This might come in handy in your note when you want to reference another document in your note. The steps below show how to add the hyperlink to your note. You will be adding a complete path & filename to your document. The method shown below is only one of many ways to get the full path & filename into the hyperlink box.

*Note:* this method will also work with PowerPoint, MP3s, & Videos. \\ \\

#. Open your Note file.

#. Add your note and insert the text of your note.

#. Use your mouse to drag over the text of your note that you want to be a hyperlink. (this selects the text and it turns blue) \\ \\

* *The steps below show how to get a full /Path/ & /Filename/ by using a shortcut* \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink3b.png?maxwidth=500 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink3b.png]] \\ \\

#. Open Windows explorer and locate your document. Then _right click_ on that document.

#. Windows will show a pop-up menu, click on *Create Shortcut*. \\ \\  [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink3c.png?maxwidth=500 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink3c.png]] \\ \\

#. Now locate the new /Shortcut/ and _right click_ on it.

#. Windows will show you a pop-up menu, click on *Properties*. \\ \\  [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink3d.png?maxwidth=500 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink3d.png]] \\ \\

#. Windows shows you a pop-up window for the Properties of your /Shortcut/.

#. _Right click_ on the blue selected /Target/ filename. Windows shows you a pop-up menu. Click on *Copy*. Now your path & filename are stored in the clipboard. \\ \\  [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink3e.png?maxwidth=500 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink3e.png]] \\ \\

#. Now in your Note file ensure that the text that you want to add a hyperlink to is still selected.

#. _Right click_ in the hyperlink box. In the pop-up menu click on *Paste*. \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink3f.png?maxwidth=500 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink3f.png]] \\ \\

#. This step is very important. In the hyperlink box move the cursor to the end of the text and delete the quote character.

#. Then move the cursor to the beginning of the text in the hyperlink box and delete the quote character there. \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink3g.png?maxwidth=500 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink3g.png]] \\ \\

#. Now click in your note away from the selected text.

#. You will now notice that your text is turned into a hyperlink (it should be blue). Hover your mouse over the new hyperlink, you will see the link location for your document in the pop-up box. If you hold the *Ctrl* key down on your keyboard and click on the link with your mouse, Logos4 will open your document in the appropriate windows program.

!!! Creating hyperlinks to URLs

 You can also create hyperlinks to URLs (internet webpages) in your Note files. This comes in handy when you want to reference a website in your note. \\ \\

#. Open your Note file.

#. Add your note and insert the text of your note.

#. Use your mouse to drag over the text of your note that you want to be a hyperlink. (this selects the text and it turns blue) \\ \\

* *Getting the URL into your clipboard* \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink4b.png?maxwidth=500 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink4b.png]] \\ \\

#. Open your internet Browser and navigate to the webpage that you want to link to.

#. In the /Address/ bar, _right click_ on the address. In the pop-up menu click on *Copy*. Now your URL is saved in the clipboard. \\ \\

 * *Now lets add the URL to the hyperlink box* \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink4c.png?maxwidth=500 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink4c.png]] \\ \\

#. Now in the Note file make sure that your target text is still selected.

#. _Right click_ in the hyperlink box. In the pop-up menu click on *Paste*. \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink4d.png?maxwidth=500 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/NotesLink4d.png]] \\ \\

#. Now click in your note away from the selected text.

#. You will now notice that your text is turned into a hyperlink (it should be blue). Hover your mouse over the new hyperlink, you will see the link location for the URL in the pop-up box. If you hold the *Ctrl* key down on your keyboard and click on the link with your mouse, Logos4 will open your Browser to your URL.

* Using highlighting and hyperlinks in your notes can reduce the size of your note file. It also can be a good way to remember where your were in other resources and what you were thinking.

!! How can I copy/move notes to a New Note file

 As of Logos4 version 4.2 there is no simple way to do this. This wiki article will show you a work-around. But be *very careful* when performing this work-around so that you do not lose any notes!!! \\ \\

#. Open your Note file (I suggest into a floating window or blank Layout).

#. Open a New Note file where you want to copy/move your notes to. (now you have both Note files visible and side by side) \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes5b.png?maxwidth=600 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes5b.png]] \\

#. Click on *Compact* as this will make it easier to see individual notes.

#. Move your mouse to the left side of a note that you want to move/copy to the new Note file. You will see a *blue bar* appear. Click and drag the note....  \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes5c.png?maxwidth=600 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes5c.png]] \\

#. ... and drop it into your New Note file.  \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes5d.png?maxwidth=600 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes5d.png]] \\

#. Now you have *moved* your note from the original Note file to the New Note file. Notice that it is missing from your original Note file and it is showing in your New Note file.  \\ \\ [[{{$ http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes5e.png?maxwidth=600 }} >> http://wiki.logos.com/media/Notes5e.png]] \\

#. Now while still in your New Note file, if you only want a *copy* of the note that you just moved. Then on your keyboard press *Ctrl Z* (Mac users: *Cmd Z*).

#. Notice that your note reappears in your original Note file and that it is still present in the New Note file.

#. Repeat steps 4-7 for each note that you want to move/copy.
